This question is from Jonty, who swims for the Bribie Island Swim Club:

Hi Andy,

Do you ever have times when you can't get near your PB?  Does it make you upset and how do you get back to doing good times?

My favourite stroke is backstroke.  Do you still like it, now that you are swimming fly?

Hi Jonty,

There are often times when I don't get near my PB, and Im sure most swimmers would also agree that its impossible to always be swimming Pbs.

It can be upsetting but in the end swimming should be fun, keep training hard and enjoying your swimming and Im sure your times will improve.

As you are 11 you are about to do a lot of growing, during this period you might make big improvements or you might not improve at all. Just stick at it and keep your head up.

I race lots of competitions each year and for these competitions my goals are not to swim Pbs  but are to swim a certain goal time. I do this because I know that my training and taper has to be perfect in order for me to swim a Pb. This is something that you could do, you could aim to swim Pbs at a certain competition ( Eg. Queensland States) and set smaller goals for the other meets. It is important to learn from all of your races and this will help you to continue to improve.

Since changing my main stroke I actually haven't raced a backstroke race.Im really enjoying the change and I think it has been a good for my continued improvement .However in training whenever I get the chance to do some backstroke I jump at the chance.

Have Fun

Andy
